As
an Art 30
Student, you have had at least
two years of art training.
This should have provided you with a
basic understanding of art
terminology, experience in fine arts
skills, processes and techniques.
So, this
being the last
year of art study before a
major life decision as to what comes
next, Art 30 students generally, tend
to want
to make the most of their options and
prepare a portfolio of work that they
can use to demonstrate
their skills and understanding.
Most of the
assignments in this course are
directed towards that goal.

In most
'structured' art portfolios you will
be asked to prepare, should you want
to go on to an Art College or
University level, you will be asked for a
demonstration of your skills with lines,
your use of values, color, design
understanding, overall creativity and
'other'.
How you do
these projects will demonstrate
your understanding and so
should be done to the best of your
abilities.
This
assignment is structured around the
understanding and use of lines as an
expressive language.
What is
required is an understanding of the types
of lines and how to apply line
techniques to an image as well
as the ability to creatively
illustrate from a word description.
As people
explore different corners of
the world, instances of new
species of plants and animals
are being discovered.
You are on
an exploration vacation in Africa,
and have discovered in a body of
water located in the mouth of a large
cave, what appears to be
potentially, a new species of fish.
From your
extensive knowledge of the fish and
wildlife living in this area
(research that you did prior to your
vacation), this
species is unlike anything you have
seen and think, based upon the look
of it, that it may be very
old, like the crocodile, having
a similar 'scaly' look to it.
From your
observations of the two examples you
saw in the pond, they have:
a
large thick toothy plate for
breaking off and grinding bits of
rock
rather large triangular plates on
their sides, protruding upward slightly in
the centre
front fins that are shaped and act
more like rounded hands with claws
for digging, scratching and swimming
a large fan-like tail that easily
keeps it stable
a fan-like extension from the top of
its' head in which it breaths
through
large,
expressive rounded eyes
an overall stubby
tubular shaped body approximately 1/2
meter in length
a tail that moves up and down
instead of the expected sideways
motion.
You
only see two of them and cannot
remove them from their natural
environment.
So
when asked about the find you must
rely instead, on your memory
of the details and your ability
to sketch the fish.
Using
a variety
of qualities and types of line only (no
shading, smudging, coloring), draw a
full page sketch of this fish,
including as many of the details and
'qualities' of the fish as you can.
Attention
to detail and clarity matters.
Using three
pencils, the 6B, HB and 2H, on 11x14
inch white bristle board, lightly
sketch the shape of the fish using a
3/4 view (seeing the front of the
fish and one side). *recommend doing
'thumb nail sketches' first to
establish shape, angle, details
By varying
the type of pencil used, the quality
of the end of the pencil, the types
of lines used and varying the weight
of the pencil lines, illustrate as
much about the fish, based upon the
description, as possible.
-see lines/finishing lines
Remember to
use a scrap piece of paper or plastic
wrap to avoid smudging the work.
