- Art Safety Link
- The WHMIS information system has been established in the
workplace to help insure the worker is informed about the health risks and safety
procedures in using and handling materials in the workplace.
- This includes art materials. Materials which can include most things on the face of the
earth, man-made or natural.
- Creating art does not exempt the artist from the basic health risks various
materials might present, if they are used without proper precautions.
- To help insure your understanding of the
WHMIS system and
the safe use of the potential materials you might be using in this course, this
introduction to WHMIS
and safety procedures has been
included in this course.
- There is a test at the end, so read to understand.

Summary:
- The safe use of art materials is essential in the
short and long term use for artists. Over the centuries, artists have been
particularly susceptible to health risks because of
the lack of proper information on the danger of the materials that they used
and the rather "carefree" way in which they used them.
- Today, information is available by law to protect the artist and the environment in the
safe use and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Creating art can be a life long activity if you protect yourself against possible injury
from dangerous materials and unsafe practices.
- Safety first in this Course.
